Gum disease is an infection in the gum tissue. There are two different stages of gum disease:
Scaling and root planing is a nonsurgical type of gum disease treatment. It essentially amounts to a deep cleaning of the mouth. We get rid of plaque and bacteria both above and below the gumline. Then, we smooth out the roots of the teeth so it is more difficult for bacteria to cling to them. Following scaling and root planing, your gums will have the opportunity to heal and reattach to your teeth.
